Field Experiences

State-of-the-art clinical training in agency and school counseling is provided through school and agency partners. Students complete 24 semester hours of clinical training, more hours than any similar program in the tri-state area. Students are also required to complete a 600+ hour internship completed at a training site approved by the program. Students in the Agency Counseling concentration complete their training in a community mental health setting, while those in the School Counseling concentration complete theirs in a school setting. Students receive individual on-site supervision and faculty supervision as a part of their training experience.

Careers

Graduates with an MEd in Counseling Psychology typically work as agency or school counselors in a variety of clinical settings which include, but are not limited to, community mental health agencies, hospitals, K-12 schools, nonprofit organizations, universities and private practice. They also may use the degree to pursue doctoral training in a related discipline.

Through core counseling classes, clinical course work and a combined 700 hours of field placement through practicum and internship, the counseling psychology program prepares mental health students to meet the educational requirements needed to apply for counselor licensure. The program also prepares school counseling students to meet the educational requirements to apply for certification upon completion of the program and passing of the Praxis examination.
